This egg is black as night and radiates heat.
This foal is already nippy and standoffish. It doesn't seem to like you at all.
This foal is already nippy and standoffish. It doesn't seem to like you at all. As it grows, this yearling has only become more aggressive but seems to be becoming more tolerant of you - and only you. It refuses all tack except a bridle and at night you are wary of approaching it for fear of the flames. Something about the look in its eyes is unsettling, too.
Among the least friendly and most difficult to bond with of all creatures, nightmares are highly unusual horses. In addition to looking like any regular horse, daylight also finds them with a sleepier, more docile, and ultimately more cooperative personality. As the sun falls below the horizon, however, the changes that gave rise to the nightmare moniker come to light. These horses perk up as the darkness progresses, bringing to the surface their aggression and making them much more dangerous to approach, and as the darkness fully takes over their manes and tails ignite in brilliant plumes of fire. At this stage they are too dangerous to be approached except by their chosen companion. A nightmare only takes one companion at a time and it is only this person who is permitted to ride the horse. Over time, though, it becomes clear that the nightmare has some sort of sinister influence. Persons chosen by nightmares seem to slowly lose themselves to an obsession, ignoring important tasks in favor of spending an increasing amount of time with the horse. All of them report an increase in frightening dreams - many of which prominently, frighteningly, feature their horse - and stop sleeping because of the dreams. Most eventually die in a fire thought to be set by the nightmare or while riding the horse. Many ancient peoples feared these horses for these reasons and tried to drive them out of their lands, and against warnings, tales, and better judgement, people have again begun to befriend the once-shunned nightmare.
